Andratx is on the south-west tip of Mallorca, 26 kilometres west of Palma. It sits in the foothills of the dramatic Tramuntana Mountains. The hillsides around this charming market town are covered in orange, pine, almond and olive trees. Tourists usually stay either clost to Port Andratx or Sant Elm beach.

High-class boutiques, exclusive restaurants and a stylish harbour area attract many international celebrities to the town. Michael Schumacher and Claudia Schiffer are just two of Andratx’s well-known residents.

History & Culture

The town is set back from the port and was built this way to protect the people against pirate attacks. During the 13th-century, Andratx was the home of both the Bishop of Barcelona and King Jaume I. The upper part of town consists of historic houses along cobbled streets. At the top of the hill is the fortress-like church of Santa Maria. The Son Mas Castle houses some significant paintings by Durer and Tintoretto. The City Hall is in the Son Mas area. There is a fascinating botanical garden within the complex. The building once was the orginal Manor-house for the town.

Leisure & recreation

The port and marina provide an excellent place for people to watch the local goings-on and see small fishing vessels rubbing cheerfully along with luxury yachts.

There are facilities here for every type of water sports. Charter boats for both fishing and sailing leave from this point. Fishing along the rocky coast has been a pastime for centuries. Also, you will find dive centres offering equipment, tuition and private diving trips.

There are many quality golf courses within an hour’s drive of Andratx, providing a variety of golfing challenges and levels. Without exception, golf courses on the island are of an exceptionally high standard.

Andratx is an excellent place for cycling, and bikes can easily be hired from many retail locations. Be warned; this is a hilly area, and there are some quite tricky roads to navigate! For walkers and runners, there are plenty of footpaths that will treat the user to stunning views at almost every turn.

There are also riding stables close to the town, and you can find excellent hacking fields, and tracks in the area.

Beaches

Cala Blanca is a rocky beach, which generally has calm sheltered waters that are great for bathing and seldom gets busy. Close by, Cala d’Egos is a small and quiet sandy bay, with calm waters.

Cala en Fonoll is another beautiful sandy cove close to the mouth of Puerto Andratx. This beach is quiet, and there are no bars or restaurants close to the bay.

History

The town of Andratx is very old. Until recently it was pretty much only local Majorcans who lived here. The area was first occupied by Romans, who named the town Andrachium.  2nd-century BC pottery and coins have been found which give evidence of this.

During the 16th century, as a means of protection against pirates, the Romans erected a system of observation towers on the island. Out of 14 towers in the district of Andratx and Calvià, 12 still exist. The Andratx region also includes the towns of Port d’Andratx, Sa Coma, S’Arracó, Sant Elm and Camp de Mar. Additionally, it includes the uninhabited islet of Sa Dragonera.
